From Thursday 7 October 2021, two brand new Kiwi-made CBD (cannabidiol) medications can be purchased through prescription. This comes almost three years after law changes gave birth to a new industry.
Pricing of the new medications is expected to be comparable to other imported cannabidiol products that have been harder to access in the last week.
While this change is considered a milestone in the CBD industry, Health Minister Andrew Little has expressed concern that it’s taken so long to achieve.
These new local products were not expected to come to fruition at least until the end of the year, according to the New Zealand Medicinal Cannabis Council (NZMCC). So this development has come as quite a surprise.
The company producing these new products is Helius Therapeutics. According to their CEO, Cameron Doran, this development “is only the start of the journey”. He also mentioned that, while it has taken a long time to achieve this result, Kiwi patients were their priority.
